ABOUT THE COURSE
Gaining the BACP-approved CPCAB L5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling allows you to develop SCoPED Column B competency and skills to add to your existing Column A Diploma qualification.
The qualification meets the competencies of SCoPED Column B and, with sufficient practice hours, provides a route to accreditation with professional associations in counselling, such as BACP.
Some of the gains of a Column B status added to a Column A qualifications:
- Provides evidence of the competencies more often sought by employers
- Develops your independent private practice
- Furthers competency as a reflective thinker
- Provides the skills to take a senior counselling role where client assessment, referral and routine evaluation are part of the role
- Opens the area of teaching counselling within an FE or HE context, if a suitable teaching qualification is held

COURSE DETAILS
Personal Counselling:
The course consists of:
- 120 Guided Learning hours
- Credit value – 46 credits
- The course will run over 32 weeks from September 2026 to May 2027
- This is a weekly course on Tuesdays of each week from 4.30 pm to 8.30 pm
Start Date: September 8th, 2026
End Date: May 4th, 2027
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Client Work:
A minimum of 60 hours one-to-one; hours of personal counselling
Personal counselling hours before the course starts can be used for some of the 60 required hours, with only 10 personal counselling hours needing to be completed on the course.
Clinical Supervision:
A minimum of 12 hours of supervision is required, which may be either group or one-to-one supervision.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will be expected to have obtained the CPCAB TC-L4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or its equivalent (minimum 420 Guided Learning Hours).
Some personal and professional attributes that will be required on the course include:
- Ability to identify reasons for training beyond personal development
- Academically able to cope with this level of training
- Emotional stability, resilience, and the absence of disturbance
- Personal qualities of imagination, sensitivity, and an ability to benefit from self-development
- Ability to meet others openly and honestly and the resilience to meet the challenges this may at times present
- Ability to form therapeutic relationships based on the person-centred and experiential approach
