About the Course
This Level 5 Diploma is a qualification designed to give learners the specialist knowledge, skills, and competences to work as counsellors with children and young people aged 11-18.
The qualification will enable successful candidates to work as counsellors with children and young people in a range of job and career opportunities, which include but are not limited to:
- A counsellor employed by a School or College
- A counsellor in an agency or organisation which specialise in counselling children and young people
- A private counsellor working for an external organisation such as a school, youth club, wellness/mental health setting
- An ‘adult’ counsellor in independent practice wishing to extend their work to cover this age range
- A youth worker in the community
- An outreach worker with adolescents/teenagers
To be able to apply for entry to the L5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People you will need:
- The CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4)
- A Counselling qualification with a minimum 420 Guided Learning Hours and which has met BACP standards for counsellors in training in addition to appropriate pre counselling qualification Counselling Skills or equivalent training.
The qualification currently offers routes onto the following professional body registers accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA):
- BACP – British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (Core Curriculum)
- NCS – National Counselling Society
- BACP Core competences for work with children and young people (11–18 years)
- NCS Competency framework for working with children and young people and linked to ACC requirements for working with children and young people

Course Details
The course consists of:
- 120 Guided Learning Hours
- Credit Value- 46 credits
- The course is a one-year L5 Diploma in Working with Children and Young People (CYP) based on Oct CPCAB’s model of practitioner development and change and runs over nine weekend Blocks from October 2023 to September 2024

Course Requirements
Client Work:
A minimum of 60 hours formally contracted counselling (one-to-one) including client assessment.
Clinical Supervision:
A minimum of 12 hours supervision is required which may be either group or one-to-one supervision.
Entry Requirements
Applicants are expected to have obtained the CPCAB TC-L4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or its equivalent ( minimum of 420 Guided Learning Hours and have met BACP standards for counsellors in training).
Some professional requirements and personal attributes that will be required on the course include:
- You will have a Placement working with CYP, or a Placement in place at the start of the course
- Be prepared to complete 60 hours of client contact whilst on the course
- Maintain clinical supervision for the 60 hours client contact at a ratio of 1:8 contact hours to supervision hours
- Emotional stability and resilience and the absence of disturbance
- Ability to form and maintain therapeutic relationships
- Ability to work flexibly and creatively
